This week I introduced Anthony, Stephan, David and Ciaran to the classic strategy board game Axis and Allies. A&A is one of the most popular strategy board games on the market, second only to Risk. Personally, I prefer A&A to risk because of the greater depth of gameplay and my own interest in the history of the Second World War.
A&A is a board game representation of World War 2 from 1942 onwards. The Axis consists of Germany and Japan, versus the Allies: USA, UK and USSR. Each player must use their various units (land, air and naval) to defeat the opposition and win the game.
Unfortunately, Ciaran had to leave the game after about 2 hours leaving myself as the sole Axis player against Stephen, Anthony and David. The strategy we had agreed upon, to eliminate USSR (Stephen) by attacking from two fronts, eventually paid off after another 3 hours. With the Russians gone, David and Anthony agreed to surrender leaving the Axis as winners.
A&A is a game I have enjoyed for many years, but does not have a very wide appeal as opposed to less time consuming / strategic games (Monopoly, Checkers etc). That being said, I think everyone enjoyed the game (perhaps more then they were expecting) and we were up playing untill 3am and had a good laugh.
